A President’s Day Weekend Staycation
There is the vacation. The Staycation. And then there’s the "Shopscation" — or rather, The "Shopscation" at Columbus Circle. Instead of pumping that hard-earned cash into jet fuel and renting air between four walls this coming President’s Day Weekend, why not take an easy, tangible, and even edible escape? The Shops at Columbus Circle has all the ingredients for a great getaway. Here they are:
It’s indoors, it’s warm (think subtropical without the humidity or bugs). And it has over 50 stylish and sophisticated shops and boutiques. Whatever you need, you’ll find it here, from big-name fashion houses like Hugo Boss and Michael Kors to eclectic food shops like Sugarfina (because we all need some luxurious candy in our lives).
A Luxury Hotel
The Mandarin Oriental New York’s new $1,500 “Urban Serenity” package was designed to help guests attain a renewed sense of well-being, with rejuvenating spa treatments, yoga or meditation, detoxing juices, and more. Guests are encouraged to surrender their cell phone; it’s returned upon check out, cleaned and looking like new.
This year, President’s Day Weekend also happens to coincide with National Drink Wine Day on February 18. We couldn’t think of a better excuse to raise a glass (or two). Center Bar has an acclaimed wine program, and Ascent Lounge New York also has an impressive wine list. At both, the expert staff can advise on whether it’s going to be a Sauvignon Blanc afternoon or a Pinot Noir night.
With so many big-name restaurants under one roof, you won’t lack for options. How about sampling some of the foods our founding fathers loved? At Bouchon Bakery, the steak salad is sprinkled with dried cherries (a George Washington favorite). And French fry-obsessed President Thomas Jefferson would have loved the addictive fries at Landmarc.
Jazz at Lincoln Center is pulling out all the stops over President's Day weekend, with performances from jazz great Wynton Marsalis to pianist Benny Green. If you didn’t make reservations, no worries: You can swing by the Late Night Sessions with the Evan Sherman Big Band at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Whether you’re a newcomer to jazz or a longtime fan of the music, it’s sure to please.
